Mojacar History: Settled since the Bronze Age, Mojacar was visited by Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Greeks, the Greeks called it Murgis Akra, though the later Arabic name of Muxacra was closer to it's present name.
Mojacar's period of greatest importance was during the Moorish occupation when it was ruled from Cordoba, and it's castle and fortifications were built. These were further reinforced during the 14th and 15th centuries as the struggle with the Christian crusaders increased in intensity.
The fortifications did not however succeed in protecting the population, as the entire town was put to the sword in 1435 after a fierce battle. The Moors finally submitted to the Christians in 1488.
Despite these conflicts, Mojacar continued to grow up until the 19th century, when a period of decline occurred due to a severe drought.
The late 20th century saw the arrival of tourism and a new period of prosperity to the area, with property development especially near the coast providing jobs for the local populace.
